Cervical Cancer Control for Vietnamese American Women
An Evidence-Based Practice
Description
Two members of the local Vietnamese community were trained as lay health workers to act as role models, provide social support, and discuss barriers to pap testing within the community.
Lay health workers visited Vietnamese women aged 20-79 at their homes and supplied the women with educational materials (DVD and pamphlet) that contained basic information about cervical cancer and pap testing and emphasized the importance of pap testing.
One month following the home visit, the women received a follow-up call from the lay health care worker.

Goal / Mission
The goal of this intervention was to increase cervical cancer screening among Vietnamese American women.
Impact
The Cervical Cancer Control intervention is impactful in increasing the likelihood that women who have a history of at least one pap test receive another pap test in the future.
Results / Accomplishments
Women with a history of at least one pap test during their lifetime were significantly more likely to receive a pap test following the lay health care worker visit when compared to women with a history of at least one pap test during their lifetime who received educational materials, but not a visit from a lay health care worker (p=.04). Pap testing was verified by medical records. No significant changes were observed in woman who had never received a pap test.
